Early morning light warms the skin still tempered by evening shade. Burrowed into a welter of thickly impastoed blades of grass and a blanket carved from color, the sleeper awakes. Her gaze is direct and connection to the viewer real. These paintings each in their own way showcase the true talents of the artist, using a pared down and stylized vocabulary Degen manages to convey the breadth of humanity in all of its glorious complexity.
